Circulation Claims in Supplements: What "Supports Cardiovascular Function" Really Means

Quick answer

"Supports circulation" is a structure/function claim: allowed with the FDA note, not reviewed by the FDA, and backed only if human evidence fits the same dose. L-arginine helped mild to moderate ED at 1.5 to 5 grams a day; one Maxforce gummy's whole blend is 82 mg. ED can signal heart disease, so see a doctor.

The claim

What does "supports circulation" mean on a supplement?

It means less than it sounds. "Supports healthy circulation" or "supports cardiovascular function" is a structure/function claim. It describes a general job in the body, not a medical result.

Words like these turn up on many men's supplements, often next to an amino acid called L-arginine. They suggest stronger blood flow, a healthier heart and better performance in one line. On their own, they promise none of those things.

The Maxforce sales page uses this kind of line: "promote healthy blood circulation to support cardiovascular function". The jar label does not. The label says only that the gummies may support vitality, drive and performance.

The rules

What does the law require for a circulation claim?

Two agencies set the rules. The FDA lets supplements describe a structure or function in the body, but the label must say the statement was not evaluated by the FDA and the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The FDA does not approve these claims before sale (FDA Supplements Q&A, 2026).

The FTC looks at the evidence behind the words. It expects competent and reliable science, generally well-designed human trials. A study on one ingredient may not support a claim about a finished product unless the dose, formula and people match (FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance, 2022).

"Supports healthy circulation". Allowed with the FDA note, but still needs evidence under FTC rules.

"Lowers blood pressure", "prevents heart disease", "treats ED". Not allowed for a supplement.

Citing a 5-gram arginine trial for a product with a fraction of that. The FTC says this may not support the claim.

The body

How does blood flow work in sexual health?

An erection is mainly a blood-flow event. Nerves signal the blood vessels in the penis to relax, more blood flows in and the tissue firms up. A molecule called nitric oxide is a key messenger in that chain.

  1. 1

    Nerve signal

Arousal sends a signal from the brain and nerves.

  2. 2

    Nitric oxide released

The lining of the blood vessels makes nitric oxide, partly from L-arginine.

  3. 3

    Vessels relax

Smooth muscle relaxes and blood flow rises.

  4. 4

    Firmness

Blood fills the tissue. Healthy vessels and nerves keep this working.

Prescription ED medicines work later in this chain, by keeping the relaxed state going longer. That is why vessel health matters so much, and why the same damage that clogs heart arteries can show up as ED first.

Arginine

Does L-arginine support circulation at gummy doses?

Not at the doses trials used. L-arginine is the raw material for nitric oxide, so it is the usual reason a supplement says "circulation". A pooled analysis found it helped mild to moderate ED compared with placebo or no treatment, at 1.5 to 5 grams a day (Rhim et al., 2019).

In that analysis, side effects were more common on arginine (8.3%) than placebo (2.3%), though none were severe. Sexual desire scores did not change. Now compare the dose with one Maxforce gummy.

1,500 mglowest trial dose÷ 82 mgwhole gummy blend≈ 18×more than the entire blend

Even if all 82 mg were arginine, the lowest studied dose would be about 18 times higher, and the top dose about 60 times. Arginine shares the blend with eight other ingredients, and its amount is not published. So a circulation effect from this dose is not something the research can support.

Cautions

Which supplement ingredients can work against heart health?

Some ingredients in men's formulas carry heart or blood-pressure cautions of their own. That is one more reason a "cardiovascular" claim needs care. Here is what the sources say about four ingredients on the Maxforce label.

Heart-related cautions for ingredients on the label

IngredientCaution from the sourceWho should ask first
L-arginineCan lower blood pressure; after a heart attack it may raise the risk of death (MSK About Herbs, Arginine, 2022)People on blood-pressure drugs or with heart disease
Horny goat weedReports of rapid irregular heartbeat and chest pain (OPSS, Horny goat weed, 2024)Anyone with heart disease
TribulusRaised heart rate reported above 1,000 mg a day (OPSS Tribulus, 2024)People with heart rhythm problems
Caffeine5 mg per gummy; 400 mg a day is a common safe ceiling (FDA, Caffeine)People who are very caffeine-sensitive

The doses in one gummy are small, and these cautions mostly come from larger amounts. Still, the sales page lists only five ingredients and leaves out horny goat weed, tribulus and caffeine. Go by the jar, as our label vs sales page guide explains.

ED and the heart

Why can ED be an early sign of heart disease?

Because both start in the same place: the lining of the blood vessels. The vessels in the penis are smaller than heart arteries, so damage can show up there first. ED may appear years before heart symptoms, and men with ED and no clear cause should be screened for heart disease (Mayo Clinic, ED and heart disease, 2026).

Heart disease, diabetes and obesity all make ED more likely (NIDDK, Definition & Facts for ED, 2024). MedlinePlus puts it plainly: if you have ED, tell your doctor, or the problem behind it may go untreated (MedlinePlus, Erectile Dysfunction, 2025).

Seen this way, a "circulation" gummy can be a distraction. The useful step is a check of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

Warning signs

When do chest or blood-pressure symptoms need a doctor?

Some symptoms cannot wait for a supplement trial. Use this list as a guide, and when in doubt, get checked.

  • Chest pain, pressure or tightness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or backCall 911
  • Sudden shortness of breath, fainting or a racing, irregular heartbeatCall 911
  • Dizziness or light-headedness after starting a new supplementStop; call doctor
  • Home blood-pressure readings well above or below your usual rangeCall doctor
  • ED that keeps coming back, with no clear reasonBook a visit
  • You take nitrates or blood-pressure medicine and plan to start any sexual-health productAsk first

The FDA warns that some sexual-enhancement products hide prescription drugs that can drop blood pressure dangerously with nitrates (FDA public notification, 2021). Buy only from a seller with a full label and a real checkout.

Our take

Where does Maxforce fit with circulation claims?

A round pile of fine white powder
L-arginine is a white amino-acid powder. Trials used 1.5 to 5 grams a day; one gummy's whole blend is 82 mg.

Maxforce is a vitality gummy, not a circulation or heart product. Its label says it may support vitality, drive and performance, with the FDA note. We do not repeat the sales page's circulation line as fact, because no study of this formula supports it.

If you want to try it, check your medicines first and read the L-arginine guide and the side effects page. Then compare packs and prices.

FAQ

Circulation claim questions

What does "supports healthy circulation" mean on a supplement?

It is a structure/function claim. It describes a general role in the body, needs the FDA disclaimer and is not reviewed by the FDA. It does not mean the product treats any heart or blood-vessel disease.

Can a supplement claim to improve heart health?

A supplement can say it may support normal function, with the FDA note. It cannot claim to treat, prevent or cure heart disease, and the FTC expects human evidence for the same product and dose.

Does L-arginine improve blood flow?

The body uses L-arginine to make nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. In ED trials it helped mild to moderate cases at 1.5 to 5 grams a day, a dose far above what most gummies hold.

Is L-arginine safe with blood pressure medicine?

It may not be. L-arginine can lower blood pressure, so combining it with blood-pressure drugs may not be safe. After a heart attack it may raise the risk of death. Ask your doctor first.

Does Maxforce improve circulation?

No study shows that. The sales page says the formula promotes healthy circulation, but the jar label does not make that claim. The label says only that it may support vitality, drive and performance.

Does Maxforce contain L-arginine?

Yes. L-arginine is one of nine ingredients in the 82 mg blend, but its amount is not published. The trials that found an effect used 1.5 to 5 grams a day.

Is ED a sign of heart disease?

It can be. ED and heart disease share damage to the lining of blood vessels, and ED may appear years before heart symptoms. Men with unexplained ED should have their heart health checked.

When is chest pain an emergency?

Chest pain, pressure or tightness, especially with shortness of breath, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, needs emergency care. Call 911 rather than waiting to see if it passes.

Can I take a male enhancement supplement with nitrates?

Talk to your doctor first. Many ED medicines are unsafe with nitrates, hidden drugs have been found in some supplements, and arginine can lower blood pressure further.
